Social Networking and job search 11 – building and maintaining momentum in your search with an ongoing flow of searches and targets

At the end of Social Networking and job search 10, I said that I was going to focus on allocating time and effort in a job search. I will do that and soon, but I have decided to add in two postings now to specifically address some issues facing a colleague and friend, who has been going through a long and difficult search.

The endpoint for a successful search might be a very satisfying experience of landing that great new career opportunity you have been striving for. But even then, any job search is easily viewed as an ongoing series of challenges and setbacks, and of rejection from all the earlier tries where you did not get the job you are trying for. It can be very difficult to maintain a positive attitude through this and it can be very difficult to maintain real momentum in your search with active, focused, ongoing effort.

There are two basic tool sets that I see as helping you get through these challenges so you can keep actively going in your search, and I am going to touch on one of them here with the second going into a follow-up posting. The first of the two toolsets is an approach I have found very helpful in my ongoing searches for new work opportunities, and it applies fully to both consultants always looking for new assignments and to job candidates looking for long term, in-house positions. It is also a well tested approach that comes directly from the Five O’Clock Club playbook. Never put all your effort, energy and attention into your search for any one specific position or opportunity. Always have five or six search options in the works, and in various stages of your ongoing search process.

This is crucial as you are just setting yourself up for problems if you only look for one possible new job at a time. If you get it and it is the right one for you fine, but if this one slips through your fingers you have to start everything from scratch again. Here it does not matter if you can look back and see areas where you could have done that search better or not. If you have several or even low-end many options and opportunities in the works at once, losing any one of them is much less of a crisis, and you can immediately apply any lessons learned from it in tuning and improving your other search efforts.

This applies to how you carry out your basic research, network and connect, and in how you handle the actual job application and follow-through for it. The faster you can turn around and apply lessons learned in other searches the more effectively you can use these new insights gained.

This is about speeding up your search and more effectively capitalizing on and implementing lessons learned and it is all about gaining and keeping a more positive attitude and momentum. Improved attitude and momentum may be the most important benefits of this. If you come across as desperate for a job, and any job you are not going to present yourself as the answer to the hiring manager’s problems that have prompted them to look to hire, and you are much less likely to get that job offer. This can really work for you.

Next, I am going to focus on how to leverage your networking to help you maintain momentum, and a combination of managing your search as a multiple target search portfolio, and effective networking for momentum can really make a difference in your search results.
